Thousands tweet about Selena Gomez’s statement on ‘broken’ after Jamal Khashoggi invite

Selena Gomez’s social media has been deluged with more than a million comments expressing support after the singer told fans she is “broken” after learning that murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s fiancée attended his funeral earlier this month.

As of Monday afternoon, Gomez’s posts had been viewed more than 9 million times, while the tweet about the invitation to the Saudi royal family has been liked over 870,000 times.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also extended an invitation to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law, to come to Saudi Arabia. Kushner and Trump are considered close with the kingdom.

Khashoggi was murdered and dismembered by Saudi operatives inside the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul last month. The 59-year-old was a Washington Post contributor and had criticized the crown prince’s policies.

In the wake of his death, the Saudis have blamed rogue agents working with a rogue intelligence officer and vehemently denied any prior knowledge of the grisly killing.

But Turkey has repeatedly called for an international investigation and claimed the murder was ordered from the highest levels of the Saudi government.

Following Khashoggi’s death, several international businesses pulled out of an investment conference in Saudi Arabia.

However, since the event was canceled, other companies have remained committed to attending.
