“I have no idea what happened”: Lana Wood, Sean Connery’s long-term girlfriend, speaks out on their relationship

Here’s what she said:

“The only person who knows if it lasted is myself.

“I think he was a very beautiful man and I was very young. I didn’t want to hurt him. So I gave in.

“I’m sure at some point I asked him out. He probably asked me out too. We probably got together anyway.

“That’s just how it went down. There was no affair. I haven’t got a broken heart over this.

“Of course, I loved being Sean’s girlfriend. But I don’t know if it was luck or having a certain type of man around. I can’t say for sure if he had the desire to be with me. I was very young and relatively unknown.”

“It was all in the press. He was a cracker of a man. It was no big deal to me. He would talk about what he wanted me to do with my hair and clothes and when I had to go on my period. But we were getting on great and, at the time, in all honesty, I enjoyed my time with him.

“It was your typical British thing that ended in misery. Everyone did it, but they got caught and the end came. And I had no idea it was this big deal. I never read the papers and everything.

“But I think it was because we were so young. He was 47 and I was just 20-odd, and it was a very precarious time. We were always together, in and out of clubs. I don’t know. I think it’s because the country was saying: ‘We want to give you money.’ People at the time would say: ‘Yes, you’re ours, we’ve got a job for you.’

“They never trusted me and knew that there was tension. But there was never an affair.

“I never drank or partied or ever went near booze or drugs, or anything like that. It’s just a different generation.”
