Christmas shooting at Waukesha parade leaves two dead

Two people have been killed in a horrific shooting during a Christmas parade in Wisconsin.

The shooting took place on the outskirts of Waukesha, Wisconsin, during the annual Waukesha Christmas parade and has left 17 others injured.

Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots and screams.

The injured people have been transported to hospitals in local towns.

What happened?

In a horrifying incident, five people were killed and 17 injured in the shooting, reported NPR, which added that officials were still investigating what triggered the incident.

A source told Wisconsin Public Radio that a shooter walked up to two people and started shooting. It is not clear if there was one perpetrator or multiple shooters involved. The source added that the gunman first killed one woman and then shot and killed another woman.

The victims were taken to hospitals in Waukesha, Brookfield and Racine. Some were transported to hospitals in Illinois.

People have taken to social media to offer sympathy to the victims.

“There is no place for this kind of violence,” Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett said.

Waukesha County Sheriff Eric Severson said the shooting did not appear to be an act of terrorism.

In a statement, one of the shooting victims’ families said: “Our hearts are broken and our entire community is in shock. We want all of our friends and family to know that they can expect constant updates about the conditions of our loved ones.”

In a statement, Waukesha mayor Shawn Reilly said his team was following the event, reported WTMJ.

“At this time the sheriff is doing an investigation on the scene to figure out what happened, but I know that everybody in our community is connected with this incident,” he said.

“There is absolutely no place for this kind of violence in our community. My thoughts are with the victims, their families and their friends.”
